Young Swimmers Set Records at the 2026 U.S. National Championships

The 2026 U.S. National Championships in Irvine produced an American record in the women's 100-meter freestyle and several notable age-group performances. Official results distinguish open American records from National Age Group records, an important difference when comparing times across age categories.

The standout individual performance of the meet belonged to Anna Moesch, who broke her own American record in the women's 100m freestyle, touching in 51.88 seconds to reset the national mark she'd already claimed. She backed that up the following night by winning the 200m freestyle in a personal-best 1:55.05, going out fast enough to sit nearly a full second ahead of the field at the midpoint of the race.

Notable age-group performances

Several leading performances came from age-group swimmers. Liberty Clark claimed her third National Age Group record of the meet in the 50-meter freestyle final at 24.28 seconds, while Benjamin Jaggers, Max Laine, Sawyer Stolarczyk and Julian Rusk set a 15–18 record in the 400-meter medley relay.

The record times indicate depth within the age-group field, although a single meet cannot establish how those athletes will progress at senior level. Comparisons are most useful when they use the same course, event and official record category.

Competing alongside Olympic champions

The rising talent competed alongside some of the sport's biggest names, which only raised the stakes further. Eight-time Olympic champion Caeleb Dressel, working his way through a comeback ahead of the Los Angeles 2028 Games, posted his fastest 100m freestyle time since the 2024 US Olympic Trials, touching in 47.70 seconds to claim the national title and signaling real progress in his return to top form.

Two-time Olympic champion Kate Douglass, fresh off breaking the 50m freestyle world record earlier in the year at the Pro Swim Series in Indianapolis, and fellow two-time Olympic champion Gretchen Walsh, who'd taken that same world record from Douglass just a week later, both headlined a women's 50m freestyle field that had fans buzzing well before the starting horn. Walsh went on to set a new American record of 24.51 in the event during the championship, adding yet another mark to what's already been a record-shattering year for the 50m sprint events.

What comes next

Several leading U.S. swimmers skipped Nationals to prepare for the 2026 Pan Pacific Championships, so the Irvine results do not provide a complete ranking of the national field. The younger swimmers' next useful benchmarks will be future qualifying meets and competition against senior international fields.
