ICE Officer Fatally Shoots Motorist in Minneapolis During Federal Operation
An ICE officer fatally shot a motorist in Minneapolis during a federal immigration operation, sparking controversy and highlighting tensions between local leaders and federal authorities.
An Immigration and Customs Enforcement officer shot and killed a motorist in Minneapolis on Wednesday during the Trump administration’s intensified immigration enforcement efforts in major U.S. cities. Federal officials said the officer acted in self-defense, while Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey called the shooting “reckless” and said it should not have happened. According to the Department of Homeland Security, ICE officers were carrying out targeted operations when a group of protesters blocked their path. DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said one woman escalated the situation by using her vehicle as a weapon, attempting to run over officers in what she described as an act of domestic terrorism. The shooting occurred around 10:25 a.m. local time and was captured in several videos posted to social media. Footage from different angles appears to show an ICE officer approaching a maroon SUV stopped in the middle of the road, ordering the driver to open the door and grabbing the handle. As the vehicle began to move forward, another officer standing in front of the SUV drew his gun and fired at least two shots at close range, stepping back as the vehicle advanced. It remains unclear from the videos whether the SUV struck the officer. The vehicle then accelerated, hitting two parked cars before coming to a stop. In a statement, federal officials said the officer fired because he feared for his life, as well as the safety of his fellow officers and the public. The driver was fatally wounded, while officers injured during the incident are expected to fully recover. President Donald Trump addressed the incident on Truth Social, claiming that an ICE officer was “viciously” run over and was hospitalized but expected to survive. He also accused the “Radical Left” of routinely threatening and attacking law enforcement and ICE agents. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said the driver had been blocking traffic on Portland Avenue when a federal officer approached her vehicle on foot. According to O’Hara, the driver then attempted to drive away, leading to the fatal encounter.
Why This News Matters:
The deadly shooting in Minneapolis brings into sharp focus the strain between federal immigration authorities and local leaders, while underscoring the very real human consequences of stepped-up ICE operations in large U.S. cities. It reflects deep disagreements over immigration policy, how and when force should be used by federal agents, and how cities should respond when federal enforcement actions unfold in their communities. With sharply different accounts from federal officials, city leaders and videos shared by bystanders, the incident raises pressing concerns about transparency, accountability and public safety during immigration operations. The death also adds to a growing number of fatalities tied to immigration crackdowns since 2024, intensifying a nationwide debate over how these efforts are conducted and the toll they take on families and neighborhoods.
About the victim
Court records show that Renee Nicole Macklin Good had previously been married to Timmy Ray Macklin, who died in 2023 at the age of 36. His father, Timmy Ray Macklin Sr., told the Minnesota Star Tribune that the couple shared a child who is now 6 years old. “There’s nobody else in his life,” Macklin Sr. said, referring to the child. Macklin Good’s mother, Donna Ganger, said the family was notified of her daughter’s death late Wednesday morning. “That’s so stupid” that she was killed, Ganger told the newspaper, adding that her daughter was likely “terrified” in her final moments. She rejected claims that her daughter had been involved in confronting ICE officers, saying Macklin Good was “not part of anything like that at all.” A hospital record obtained by The Associated Press identified the woman as 37-year-old Renae Macklin-Good, though business filings listed her name as Renee Nicole Macklin Good. On social media, she described herself as a “poet and writer and wife and mom,” originally from Colorado and now living in Minnesota. Her profile photo shows her smiling as she holds a young child close to her face. Video from the scene posted online shows a visibly distraught woman sitting near the vehicle involved in the shooting, sobbing and identifying Macklin Good as her spouse. She said the couple had a 6-year-old child together. “That’s my wife, I don’t know what to do!” the woman cries in the video. She was not publicly identified. At an evening news conference in Minneapolis, Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the ICE officer involved, saying he had previously encountered similar situations and acted according to his training. Noem appeared to reference a prior incident in June in which she said the same officer had been rammed and dragged by an “anti-ICE” motorist. “We are still out on the street doing our work to get dangerous criminals off the streets of Minneapolis,” Noem said, adding that immigration enforcement agencies have made more than 1,500 arrests across Minnesota in recent weeks. Noem said she spoke earlier in the day with Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz and acknowledged they disagreed about the shooting. She maintained that the officer acted appropriately, alleging that Macklin Good had been blocking officers with her vehicle, harassing them throughout the day and attempting to run an officer over before shots were fired. The Homeland Security secretary said the FBI is continuing to investigate the incident. She added that the officer was struck by the vehicle, taken to a hospital and later released.
What led to the Minneapolis shooting
Federal authorities deployed hundreds of immigration enforcement agents across Minneapolis on Wednesday in what officials described as the largest operation of its kind in the city in years, following heightened scrutiny after a widely publicized welfare fraud case in Minnesota. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey confirmed he was aware of the shooting involving an ICE officer and called for federal agents to leave the city immediately. “The presence of federal immigration enforcement agents is causing chaos in our city,” Frey said in a statement posted to social media. “We are demanding that ICE leave Minneapolis immediately. We stand firmly with our immigrant and refugee communities.” Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz said his office was working to gather details about the incident. In a brief statement, he said officials were seeking more information about what he described as an ICE-related shooting that occurred earlier in the day.
The fatal shooting represents a sharp escalation in immigration enforcement efforts under the Trump administration, which has intensified operations in several major U.S. cities. The Minneapolis incident was at least the fifth killing connected to immigration crackdowns reported in multiple states since 2024, underscoring growing tensions around federal enforcement actions and local opposition.
